16 Cute Christmas Coloring Pages

Cute Christmas coloring pages are one of my favorite ways to bring a little extra creativity into the holiday season without adding another complicated project to an already busy December. Give me a few colored pencils, a cozy spot at the table, and a smiling gingerbread man to color, and I’m perfectly happy for a while.

I love Christmas crafts, but I also know that not every creative afternoon needs glitter everywhere, twenty different supplies, or an entire evening of cleanup. Sometimes a simple printable is exactly what you need.

That’s why I put together these 16 cute Christmas coloring pages, filled with cheerful holiday characters, sweet decorations, and plenty of little details to make your own.

You’ll find everything from Santa Claus and adorable reindeer to Christmas ornaments, a fluffy kitten in a Santa hat, a cuddly teddy bear, and even a smiling cup of hot chocolate. I wanted these designs to feel playful and festive without becoming too complicated to color.

They’re lovely for kids, of course, but I think adults can have just as much fun with them. Especially if you’re the kind of person who gets genuinely excited about choosing the perfect shade of pink for a Christmas present. (I understand completely.)

How to Use These Free Printable Christmas Coloring Pages

Getting started couldn’t be easier.

Choose a design you like and click the Download link beneath the image to get your printable coloring page. Print it, grab your favorite coloring supplies, and you’re ready to go.

Regular printer paper works perfectly well for colored pencils and crayons. If you prefer markers, slightly thicker paper can make coloring easier and help reduce the chance of ink bleeding through.

I also recommend putting a spare sheet of paper underneath your coloring page when using markers, especially if you’re working on a table you really like.

Now, let’s get to the fun part. Here are all 16 Christmas designs, along with color suggestions and little creative ideas to help you make each one your own!

1. Cute Santa Claus Coloring Page

cute christmas coloring pages

Santa Claus is ready to spread some Christmas cheer! With his big smile, fluffy beard, and sack full of presents, this adorable Santa is a fun choice for a relaxing holiday coloring activity.

Start with a classic Christmas look, or give Santa a colorful makeover with a few unexpected shades.

Coloring ideas to try:

  • Santa’s outfit: Use bright red for his coat and hat, leaving the fluffy trim white or adding a touch of light gray for soft shadows.
  • Gift sack: Try warm brown, forest green, or even golden yellow to make it stand out from Santa’s suit.
  • Candy cane: Alternate red and white stripes, then color the bow green for a festive contrast.
  • Little star: Fill it with cheerful yellow and add a few gold glitter accents to make it sparkle.

For an extra cozy touch, lightly shade Santa’s cheeks with a pink colored pencil. You can also use a pale blue pencil around the edges of his beard to give the white areas a little more dimension without making them look too dark.

2. Cute Christmas Bell Coloring Page

cute christmas coloring pages

Ding, dong! This cheerful little Christmas bell is decorated with a beautiful bow, holly leaves, and tiny hearts along the bottom. Its winking face adds a playful touch, making it an especially sweet design for anyone who loves cute holiday decorations.

Gold and red are a classic combination for Christmas bells, but pastel colors can give this one a completely different personality.

Fun coloring ideas:

  • The bell: Try golden yellow with a little orange shading along one side to create a shiny, metallic appearance.
  • Big festive bow: Color it bright red or candy pink, keeping the center knot slightly darker for extra depth.
  • Holly leaves and berries: Use two shades of green for the leaves and deep red for the berries.
  • Tiny hearts: Make each heart a different color, such as pink, red, and lavender, for an adorable finishing touch.

Want to make the bell look extra shiny? Leave a small white highlight on the round clapper at the bottom, and gently blend a darker shade around its edges.

For the surrounding stars, a mix of soft yellow and pale gold will add just enough sparkle without taking attention away from the smiling bell.

3. Cute Christmas Ornaments Coloring Page

cute christmas coloring pages

Three happy Christmas ornaments are hanging together, each decorated with its own adorable pattern! From wavy stripes and tiny stars to delicate snowflakes and little hearts, there’s plenty of room to experiment with different holiday color combinations.

Instead of making all three ornaments match, try giving each one a different Christmas-inspired theme.

Creative coloring ideas:

  • Striped ornament: Combine peppermint pink, cherry red, and white for a sweet candy-inspired look. Color the small dots in gold to add a little contrast.
  • Star ornament: Go for a wintry palette of icy blue, silver-gray, and lavender. Bright yellow stars will pop beautifully against the cooler shades.
  • Snowflake ornament: Use mint green or soft turquoise for the main section, leaving the snowflakes white so their intricate shapes stand out.
  • Decorative bows: Choose coordinating colors for the bows, or make all three bright red to tie the designs together.

The snowflakes have smaller spaces than the other decorations, so fine-tip markers or sharpened colored pencils will help keep the details neat.

For a fun finishing touch, add a few tiny white dots to the colored ornaments with a white gel pen. They’ll look like little reflections from twinkling Christmas tree lights!

4. Cute Smiling Snowflake Coloring Page

cute christmas coloring pages

Who knew a snowflake could be this adorable? With its happy little face, rosy cheeks, and six chunky branches, this friendly snowflake brings a playful winter feel to your Christmas coloring collection. A smiling star and a striped candy cane complete the simple, cheerful scene.

The large, open spaces make this design especially easy for younger children to color, but there are still plenty of ways to get creative!

Coloring ideas to try:

  • Happy snowflake: Start with a very light blue or periwinkle, then use a slightly darker blue near the center and along the branches for a frosty effect.
  • Smiling star: Pick a sunny yellow or warm peach, with a little orange around the edges to give it a soft glow.
  • Candy cane: Stick with traditional red and white stripes, or switch things up with pink and mint green for a playful peppermint look.
  • Rosy cheeks: Add a gentle touch of blush pink to both characters to make their expressions even sweeter.

Here’s a fun trick: instead of coloring the entire snowflake, leave the middle white and shade just the tips of its branches. This creates a lovely icy appearance while keeping the design bright.

You could also draw a few tiny snow dots in the empty background with a light blue pencil to make it look like your happy snowflake is floating through a gentle snowfall.

5. Cute Christmas Tree Coloring Page

cute christmas coloring pages

This little Christmas tree is all dressed up for the holidays, complete with shiny ornaments, a star on top, and two beautifully wrapped presents underneath. Its adorable smiling face makes it look just as excited for Christmas morning as everyone else!

With its simple branches and large decorations, this design is perfect for playing with traditional Christmas colors or creating a dreamy pastel tree.

Coloring ideas to bring your tree to life:

  • Christmas tree: Use three shades of green, starting with a lighter green near the top and gradually getting darker toward the bottom branches.
  • Round ornaments: Try a mix of ruby red, golden yellow, and bright blue. You can also make each ornament a different color for a cheerful, mismatched look.
  • Star topper: A bold yellow star with a little orange shading near the points will make the top of the tree stand out.
  • Wrapped presents: Color one box red with a cream-colored ribbon, and give the polka-dot gift a light pink background with dark green dots.

For a little extra personality, color the tree’s round cheeks rosy pink and add a few tiny white highlights to the ornaments.

A fun idea for kids: Once the tree is colored, use metallic gel pens to draw little strings of Christmas lights between the ornaments. Small dots of red, yellow, and blue can turn this simple tree into a wonderfully festive decoration!

6. Santa’s Sleigh Full of Presents Coloring Page

cute christmas coloring pages

Looks like Santa has been busy getting ready for Christmas Eve! His magical sleigh is packed with three beautifully wrapped gifts, just waiting to be delivered. With its curly runners, little star decorations, and snowflakes floating nearby, this sweet holiday scene is full of Christmas magic.

The oversized gift boxes are perfect for experimenting with colorful wrapping paper, while the sleigh itself offers plenty of space for bold, festive shades.

Ideas for coloring this Christmas sleigh:

  • Santa’s sleigh: Give it a rich cranberry-red finish, with dark burgundy shading along the curved edges. Color the runners warm gold for a beautiful contrast.
  • Three Christmas presents: Make each package unique! Try emerald green with a red ribbon, icy blue with a silver bow, and soft pink with a golden ribbon.
  • Decorative stars: Fill the stars on the sleigh with bright yellow to make them stand out against the darker body.
  • Floating snowflakes: Use pale blue or light lavender, keeping the centers white for a delicate, frosty appearance.

Want to make the presents look even more special? Add your own wrapping paper designs after coloring the base colors. Tiny polka dots, diagonal stripes, or miniature candy canes can make each box look like a thoughtfully wrapped Christmas surprise.

You can also draw a few curved lines behind the sleigh to suggest it’s gliding through the snowy night. A softly shaded midnight-blue background would make the colorful gifts and golden runners stand out beautifully.

7. Cute Christmas Presents Coloring Page

cute christmas coloring pages

These two smiling Christmas presents look almost too cute to unwrap! One is big and cheerful, while the smaller gift has an adorable winking expression. Both are topped with oversized bows, making them a lovely choice for anyone who enjoys bright colors and playful holiday designs.

Why not turn these gift boxes into a matching set with two different color schemes?

Here are some fun ways to color them:

  • Large gift box: Choose a soft sage green for the wrapping paper and a rich red for the ribbon. The combination feels festive without being too bright.
  • Small present: Try lavender wrapping paper with a pastel yellow bow for a sweet, unexpected Christmas palette.
  • Oversized bows: Use a slightly darker shade along the folds of each ribbon to make the loops look more dimensional.
  • Stars and snowflakes: Color the stars buttery yellow and the snowflakes a delicate ice blue to balance the warmer gift colors.

Try a little wrapping paper magic! The large blank areas on both boxes are perfect for adding handmade patterns. Draw tiny Christmas trees on the bigger present or scatter little hearts across the smaller one.

For a final playful detail, use a pink pencil to give both gifts rosy cheeks. You could even write a tiny name on the side of each box to make them look like personalized Christmas surprises!

8. Cute Christmas Hot Chocolate Coloring Page

cute christmas coloring pages

Nothing says cozy Christmas quite like a mug of hot chocolate piled high with fluffy marshmallows! This adorable little cup has a happy face, heart decorations, and a generous swirl of whipped cream. There’s even a smiling star cookie tucked inside, along with a giant candy cane for an extra festive treat.

The combination of sweet treats and holiday decorations makes this a perfect opportunity to play with warm, comforting colors.

Delicious coloring ideas to try:

  • Hot chocolate mug: Choose a creamy beige, dusty rose, or warm caramel shade. Color the decorative hearts in deep red or burgundy for a lovely contrast.
  • Whipped cream: Leave most of it white, adding subtle vanilla-yellow shadows. Make the little sprinkles colorful with pink, green, and red.
  • Fluffy marshmallows: Try a very pale peach or pink along their edges while keeping the centers white to create a soft, pillowy appearance.
  • Star cookie and candy cane: Give the star a golden-brown cookie color, and use alternating red and white stripes for the candy cane.
  • Holly decoration: A combination of dark green leaves and bright red berries will add a traditional Christmas touch.

Here’s a fun idea: Turn the mug into a cup of peppermint hot cocoa by adding tiny crushed-candy pieces to the whipped cream with a red colored pencil.

For a finishing detail, draw a few wispy curls of steam rising above the drink. You can even lightly shade the empty space around the mug in soft blue to create the feeling of a chilly winter day with something warm and delicious waiting inside!

9. Cute Christmas Penguin Coloring Page

cute christmas coloring pages

Meet the happiest little penguin at the North Pole! Dressed in a cozy striped scarf and a fluffy winter hat, this adorable penguin is spreading some holiday cheer beside a decorated Christmas tree. Its tiny flippers are stretched out as if it’s ready to give everyone a big Christmas hug!

The penguin’s winter accessories are the perfect place to experiment with fun color combinations, especially if you want something a little different from the usual red and green.

Try these adorable coloring ideas:

  • Penguin’s body: Color the outer feathers charcoal gray or black, leaving the face and belly white. Add a hint of light blue along the edges of the white areas for a cool, snowy look.
  • Winter hat: Alternate cranberry red and cream across the knitted stripes, then make the fluffy pom-pom white with soft gray shading.
  • Cozy scarf: Try a combination of mustard yellow, teal, and warm orange for a colorful accessory that stands out against the penguin’s black-and-white feathers.
  • Christmas tree: Use a deep pine green for the branches, with colorful ornaments in red, gold, and pink. A bright yellow star makes a cheerful finishing touch.

A cute little detail to add: Use a light pink pencil for the penguin’s cheeks and a warm orange for its tiny beak and feet.

If you want to create a winter wonderland, draw a gently curved snowbank beneath the penguin and tree. A few pale blue shadows in the snow will help ground the characters while keeping the scene light and festive.

10. Cute Christmas Friends Coloring Page

cute christmas coloring pages

Christmas is even more magical when you celebrate it with friends! A happy little reindeer, a smiling snowman, and an adorable gift box have gathered around a cheerful Christmas tree. Everyone looks ready for a festive celebration, and the falling snowflakes make the whole scene feel like a wonderful winter day.

With four cute characters sharing the spotlight, you can give each one its own color palette while keeping the overall picture bright and festive.

Here are some creative ways to color this Christmas scene:

  • Little reindeer: Choose warm caramel brown for its body, a lighter tan for the face and inner ears, and dark chocolate brown for the antlers. A bright red nose would give it a fun Rudolph-inspired look!
  • Friendly snowman: Keep the body mostly white, using a little pale blue around the edges. Dress it in a navy blue hat and a red-and-green striped scarf.
  • Happy Christmas tree: Try alternating shades of evergreen and lime green across the branches, with colorful ornaments and a golden star on top.
  • Smiling present: Make the gift box bright coral or turquoise, then choose a contrasting ribbon so the oversized bow really stands out.

A helpful coloring trick: Since the characters overlap, start with the smaller details, such as the reindeer’s scarf, the snowman’s buttons, and the gift’s ribbon. Then fill in the larger areas, working carefully around the finished sections.

To complete the winter scene, use a light blue colored pencil to shade the snowflakes and add a few soft shadows beneath the characters. This simple detail makes everyone look like they’re standing together in a snowy Christmas wonderland!

11. Cute Gingerbread Man Coloring Page

cute christmas coloring pages

Fresh from the Christmas cookie tray, this happy gingerbread man is ready for some holiday fun! He’s wearing a little bow tie, has three round buttons down his tummy, and is surrounded by sweet treats, including a giant candy cane and a smiling star-shaped cookie.

The best part about coloring gingerbread characters is making them look like real decorated cookies, complete with colorful frosting and sugary details.

Sweet coloring ideas to try:

  • Gingerbread cookie: Choose a warm cinnamon brown or toasted caramel for his body. Use a slightly deeper brown around the edges to create that freshly baked appearance.
  • Icing decorations: Leave the wavy lines on his arms and legs white, or color them pale pink to resemble strawberry-flavored frosting.
  • Bow tie and buttons: Try a bright green bow tie with red buttons, or use three different candy-inspired colors for a playful look.
  • Star-shaped cookie: Give the star a golden biscuit color and make its thick icing border creamy white. The little sprinkle marks can be colored red, green, and pink.
  • Candy cane: Traditional peppermint stripes work beautifully, but alternating chocolate brown and cream can make it look like another delicious holiday treat.

A fun coloring technique: Use short, gentle pencil strokes rather than pressing too hard when coloring the gingerbread man’s body. This creates a slightly textured finish that resembles the surface of a baked cookie.

For an extra creative activity, imagine you’re decorating these treats at a Christmas cookie party. Add tiny candy dots, frosting swirls, or even a little powdered-sugar effect using a white colored pencil over the brown areas.

12. Cute Snowman with Christmas Tree Coloring Page

cute christmas coloring pages

With his twig arms stretched wide and a big smile on his face, this jolly snowman looks like he’s having the best snow day ever! He’s bundled up in a striped winter hat and a cozy scarf, standing proudly beside a little Christmas tree while snowflakes drift through the air.

There’s something especially charming about the snowman’s carrot nose and fluffy pom-pom hat. They’re small details, but they can really bring his cheerful personality to life!

Coloring ideas for this snowy Christmas scene:

  • Snowman’s hat: Try alternating royal blue and bright yellow stripes for a colorful winter look. Keep the fluffy pom-pom white, with a touch of pale lavender along its edges.
  • Cozy scarf: Choose a warm combination of raspberry pink and cream. Color the fringe a slightly darker pink to make the individual strands stand out.
  • Carrot nose and twig arms: Use pumpkin orange for the nose, adding a darker orange near its base. A medium brown works well for the twig arms.
  • Little Christmas tree: Make the branches a rich spruce green, with ruby-red ornaments and a bright golden star.
  • Snowman’s buttons: Dark blue, plum, or even shiny silver would look lovely against his snowy white body.

A simple trick for coloring snow: Rather than filling the snowman’s entire body with blue, shade only the lower left edge and the area beneath his scarf. Leave most of the paper white to preserve that freshly fallen snow appearance.

You can also create a beautiful winter sky by lightly blending pale blue and soft purple around the snowflakes. Keep the snowbanks at the bottom mostly white, so the snowman and his little Christmas tree remain the stars of the picture.

13. Cute Christmas Cat Coloring Page

cute christmas coloring pages

A fluffy little cat wearing a Santa hat? That’s about as adorable as Christmas gets! This sweet kitty is sitting beside a beautifully wrapped present, looking ready to enjoy all the excitement of the holiday season. With its big sparkling eyes, tiny paws, and curly tail, it’s a lovely design for cat lovers of all ages.

You can color this Christmas kitten to look like your own pet or invent a completely new furry friend with a unique coat pattern.

Fun coloring ideas for this festive kitty:

  • Fluffy fur: Try a soft ginger-orange coat with a creamy white chest, or choose warm gray with darker stripes for a cute tabby cat.
  • Santa hat: A deep Christmas red looks wonderful with the fluffy white trim. Add a little darker red along the fold of the hat to give the fabric some depth.
  • Christmas present: Go with powder blue wrapping paper and a bright coral ribbon for a fresh, playful combination.
  • Little nose and ears: Use a gentle peachy pink for the nose and inner ears, keeping the color light so the kitten’s sweet expression stands out.

Want to create a realistic fur effect? Use short, fine pencil strokes that follow the direction of the cat’s body, especially around its chest, cheeks, and tail. Mixing two similar shades will give the fur a soft, fluffy appearance.

For a personal touch, add a tiny collar with a Christmas bell or draw your cat’s favorite toy beside the gift box. It’s a fun way to turn this adorable kitten into a special holiday portrait of your own furry companion!

14. Cute Christmas Teddy Bear Coloring Page

cute christmas coloring pages

This cuddly teddy bear looks ready for a cozy Christmas morning! Sitting beside a decorated Christmas tree and a neatly wrapped present, the little bear is wearing a warm winter scarf and showing off its adorable paw pads. Its round ears, fluffy cheeks, and gentle smile make it look just like a favorite stuffed animal waiting under the tree.

For this design, try using soft, warm colors to give the teddy bear that irresistibly cuddly appearance.

Cozy coloring ideas to try:

  • Teddy bear’s fur: Choose honey brown, warm beige, or a light mocha shade. Make the muzzle slightly lighter than the rest of the face to help its cute little nose stand out.
  • Paw pads: Soft dusty pink or a deeper caramel brown will make those adorable little paws even more noticeable.
  • Knitted scarf: Experiment with alternating burgundy and oatmeal-colored stripes for a cozy, handmade look. You could also choose olive green and mustard yellow for a more rustic Christmas style.
  • Christmas tree: Color the branches in rich woodland green and decorate the round ornaments with copper, champagne gold, and deep red.
  • Wrapped gift: A warm cream-colored box with a dark red ribbon would complement the teddy bear’s soft brown fur beautifully.

Here’s a fun way to create a plush texture: Instead of coloring the bear with one solid layer, gently build up several light layers of colored pencil. Use small circular motions to create smooth, soft-looking fur, then add a little darker shading beneath the chin, around the ears, and where the arms meet the body.

For an extra personal touch, turn the teddy bear into a special Christmas gift by drawing a small gift tag beside it with someone’s name. You could even add a tiny heart to the tag to make the finished picture feel like a sweet handmade holiday card!

15. Cute Christmas Reindeer Coloring Page

cute christmas coloring pages

Is this little reindeer ready to help Santa deliver presents? With its big sparkling eyes, tiny antlers, and cozy striped scarf, this sweet woodland friend looks especially excited about the beautifully wrapped gift beside it. The scattered snowflakes and star decorations on the present add just the right amount of Christmas charm.

This reindeer would look lovely in natural woodland colors, but you could also give it a magical, storybook-inspired appearance with softer, more whimsical shades.

Coloring ideas for this adorable reindeer:

  • Reindeer’s fur: Try a warm chestnut brown for the body and a lighter sandy beige for the face and tummy. Use a deeper chocolate shade for the little hooves.
  • Antlers and ears: Color the antlers a soft taupe or medium brown, then add a touch of peach to the inner ears for a gentle contrast.
  • Cozy winter scarf: Choose a combination of cranberry red and dusty blue, alternating the colors across the stripes. The fringed ends can match one of the scarf’s main colors.
  • Christmas present: Make the wrapping paper a beautiful midnight blue and decorate the stars in bright gold. A silver or icy white ribbon would complete the magical nighttime look.

A fun detail worth highlighting: The little spots on the reindeer’s back can be left creamy white, just like the markings on a young deer. They’ll stand out beautifully against darker brown fur.

For an extra festive twist, turn this little character into Rudolph by coloring its nose bright red! You can even add a few tiny yellow lines around the nose to make it look like it’s glowing and ready to guide Santa’s sleigh through the snowy Christmas night.

16. Cute Christmas Gnome with a Present Coloring Page

cute christmas coloring pages

This adorable Christmas gnome has a special delivery! With his oversized Santa hat, fluffy beard, and tiny hands wrapped around a gift box, he looks like he’s about to surprise someone with a little holiday magic. His sweet smile and rosy cheeks make him an especially lovable character to finish off this collection of cute Christmas coloring pages.

Gnomes are perfect for experimenting with cozy, Scandinavian-inspired Christmas colors, especially warm neutrals, muted reds, and earthy greens.

Creative coloring ideas for your Christmas gnome:

  • Oversized Santa hat: Choose a beautiful brick red or deep cranberry shade, leaving the wide brim and round pom-pom creamy white. Add some darker shading where the hat folds over to make it look soft and floppy.
  • Fluffy beard: Try a very light warm gray or pale beige around the edges, keeping the center white. This will help the individual tufts of his beard stand out.
  • Round little nose: A soft peach or rosy pink gives the gnome a friendly, cheerful appearance.
  • Christmas gift: Wrap the box in muted sage green and color the ribbon a warm terracotta or golden yellow for a rustic holiday combination.
  • Boots and mittens: Chocolate brown boots and matching red mittens will complete his cozy winter outfit.

A fun technique for the beard: Use a sharpened gray colored pencil to draw a few delicate, curved strokes that follow the direction of the fluffy edges. Keep the lines light and spaced apart so the beard looks soft rather than heavily textured.

For a charming finishing touch, add a few tiny white snow dots to the gnome’s red hat using a white gel pen. You could also write a small Christmas message on the front of the gift box, such as “For You” or “With Love,” turning this sweet little gnome into a personalized holiday greeting!

Easy Christmas Coloring Tips for Beautiful Results

Now that you’ve seen all 16 designs, you might already have a favorite picked out. Or perhaps you’ve reached the familiar stage of staring at a blank coloring page while holding six pencils and somehow still not knowing which color to use first.

I’ve found that keeping things simple makes the whole process much more enjoyable.

You don’t need professional coloring skills to make these Christmas printables look lovely. A few thoughtful color choices and some easy techniques can make a surprisingly big difference.

1. Choose Your Christmas Color Palette Before You Start

One of the easiest ways to make a coloring page look more put together is to choose a small group of colors before filling anything in.

You don’t have to limit yourself to traditional Christmas red and green, either. I love how completely different the same design can look depending on the colors you choose.

Here are three combinations worth trying:

Classic Christmas Colors

  • Christmas red
  • Evergreen
  • Golden yellow
  • Cream
  • Warm brown

Sweet Pastel Christmas

  • Dusty pink
  • Mint green
  • Lavender
  • Pale blue
  • Soft peach

Cozy Vintage Christmas

  • Burgundy
  • Sage green
  • Mustard yellow
  • Warm beige
  • Chocolate brown

Pick three main colors and two supporting shades, then repeat them in different parts of your picture.

For example, if you color Santa’s coat red, you might use that same red for a nearby ribbon or ornament. It’s a simple way to make everything feel connected without having to think too hard about every little detail.

2. Don’t Know Where to Start? Color the Smallest Details First

A big white space can sometimes make choosing a color feel strangely difficult.

My favorite solution is to begin with something tiny and easy, such as a Christmas ornament, a scarf stripe, or a little star. Once that first bit of color is on the page, deciding what comes next usually feels much easier.

Try this order:

  1. Start with small decorations, buttons, bows, or patterns.
  2. Move on to the main character or object.
  3. Add slightly darker shades where you want more depth.
  4. Finish with the background, if you want one.

You certainly don’t have to follow these steps every time. But they’re useful when you want a little direction instead of endlessly rearranging your pencils.

And if you accidentally choose a color you don’t love? Keep going. Sometimes the most unexpected combinations turn out to be the cutest.

3. Make Your Colors Pop Without Complicated Shading

You don’t need fancy blending tools or an expensive marker collection to add a little dimension to your Christmas coloring sheets.

One simple technique is to use two shades of the same color. Start with the lighter shade, then add the darker one around edges, folds, or overlapping areas.

For example:

  • Santa hats: Add darker red where the fabric bends and folds.
  • Christmas presents: Shade one side of each gift box slightly darker than the front.
  • Winter scarves: Use a deeper color between the folds to make the fabric look soft.
  • Gingerbread cookies: Add warm brown around the edges while keeping the center lighter.

If you’re working with colored pencils, begin with gentle pressure and gradually build up the color. You can always add more, but removing a heavy layer is much harder.

And please don’t feel like every object needs perfect shading. Flat, bright colors can look absolutely adorable with these simple kawaii-style designs.

4. Keep White Areas White (But Make Them Interesting)

Snowmen, fluffy beards, snowflakes, and marshmallows have one thing in common: they’re often supposed to stay white.

But leaving large sections completely untouched can sometimes make them look unfinished.

Instead of coloring them all in, try using a very light shade just around the edges.

A few options I like:

  • Pale blue for snow, snowflakes, and icy details.
  • Light gray for Santa’s beard and fluffy hat trim.
  • Soft lavender for gentle winter shadows.
  • Very pale peach for marshmallows and creamy decorations.

The trick is to use hardly any pressure at all. You want to suggest a little color, not cover up the white paper.

This is especially helpful for the snowman and polar-inspired winter designs, where keeping that snowy appearance makes such a difference.

5. What If Your Markers Bleed Through the Paper?

There’s nothing more annoying than finishing a lovely coloring page and realizing the marker ink has soaked through onto the table. Well, except perhaps finding glitter in your house three weeks after Christmas.

If you’re coloring with markers, a little preparation goes a long way.

Here’s what helps:

  • Place scrap paper or a protective sheet underneath your printable.
  • Choose thicker paper when possible, especially for alcohol-based markers.
  • Test your markers on a spare corner or separate sheet first.
  • Avoid repeatedly layering wet ink over the same area if your paper starts to wrinkle or feather.

For younger children, crayons or washable markers can be a practical choice. Colored pencils are another favorite because they’re easy to control, especially around little faces and decorations.

I also think it’s worth remembering that expensive supplies aren’t necessary. The best coloring tools are the ones you enjoy using.

6. Turn Your Finished Coloring Pages Into Christmas Crafts

One of my favorite things about printable designs is that the fun doesn’t have to end when you put the pencils away.

Your finished Christmas pictures can become part of your holiday decorations, handmade gifts, or even your December journal pages.

Here are a few creative ways to reuse them:

  • DIY Christmas cards: Cut out a colored character and glue it onto folded cardstock. Add a little holiday message inside.
  • Holiday gift tags: Print a design at a smaller size, color it, and trim it into a tag for your Christmas presents.
  • Christmas wall decorations: Hang your favorite pages together for a cheerful handmade holiday display.
  • December scrapbook pages: Cut out smaller elements, such as ornaments, stars, or little presents, and add them to your scrapbook.
  • Homemade bookmarks: Use a narrow section of a finished page, glue it onto cardstock, and add a ribbon at the top.

I especially love the idea of using the gingerbread man, reindeer, or Christmas gnome on handmade cards. Their sweet little faces already look like they’re wishing someone a Merry Christmas!

A Few Fun Ways to Enjoy Christmas Coloring Together

Coloring doesn’t have to be a solo activity. In fact, these cute little Christmas characters could be a lovely excuse to spend some creative time together during the holidays.

If you’re planning a relaxed Christmas afternoon with family or friends, try turning your coloring session into a tiny holiday tradition.

You could:

  • Let everyone choose a different Christmas character to color.
  • Pick one design and see how differently everyone colors it.
  • Create a mini Christmas coloring challenge using only five colors.
  • Play your favorite holiday songs while everyone works.
  • Display the finished pictures together as a little homemade Christmas gallery.

I love the idea of everyone coloring the same Santa or Christmas tree in completely different ways. One person might choose traditional red and green, while someone else creates a pink-and-purple Christmas masterpiece.

And really, who decided Santa’s sleigh couldn’t be turquoise?

You could even make a little coloring basket with printed pages, pencils, and crayons ready for anyone who wants a quiet break during a busy family gathering.

And remember, your finished page doesn’t have to look anything like my color suggestions. Maybe your gingerbread man needs rainbow buttons, or your Christmas gnome deserves a lavender hat.

Go for it. That’s what makes creative projects fun!

Before you go, I’d love to know:

Which Christmas coloring page was your favorite? Are you more excited to color the little reindeer, the cozy hot chocolate, the Christmas kitten, or Santa himself?

And when it comes to Christmas colors, do you prefer classic red and green, soft winter pastels, or something completely unexpected?

Save your favorite designs on Pinterest, share your thoughts in the comments on my pins, or post your finished coloring pages on Instagram and tag @cozymomjournal so I can see your creations.

I would love to see how you bring these little Christmas characters to life.

Happy coloring, and have a wonderfully creative Christmas! 🎄
